The Key Difference Between Getting By And Being Very Successful
Written by Yvonne McIntoshInterestingly there seems to be a big divide between a select few who’s business is just going gangbusters and the majority that is just getting by. Often people blame it on too much competition, saturated market, not having as much experience, somebody else has a superior product, and the list goes on. I don’t think its any of these.
I’ve had my view on this confirmed from several very successful marketers: The secret to success is the speed of your implementation. It’s like Richard Branson says: ’screw it, just do it’. The faster you turn an idea into reality the more successful you’ll be. Not every idea will make lots of money, even Richard Branson, who owns more than a hundred businesses, has had a fair share of failures, but overall he makes heaps of money. That’s because he lives by his own motto.
Even if you don’t get it 100% right or your idea is not the best of the lot, activity creates results there is no question about that. Most people have great ideas but implement only a fraction of what they would like to do. And it’s just as much time management as it is their mindset that is holding them back.
Here are my four top tips for faster implementation:
- get rid of distractions
Do you suffer from bright shiny object syndrome? Going for the next must have program, spending lots of time on facebook with not much to show for etc.?
Get rid of your distractions and you’ll be amazed how much more you get done. Discipline yourself to look at your emails only twice a day, facebook etc. only once a day,
unsubscribe from newsletters you don’t read, and focus on what really helps you to IMPLEMENT your ideas. Get help and information that you really need right now to take the next step.
- only income producing activities in business hours
Ok, do I really need to explain this one? Often people hide behind tasks that don’t make them money instead of doing the things that most need to be done. My favourite excuse is “I will go out and network as soon as my website is up”. Building a website is important but if you need clients fast it’s not your top priority. Going out and meeting people is. Discipline yourself to only doing tasks inside of your regular work hours that make you money. The more money you make the faster you can outsource the rest.
- batch all your tasks
Nothing slows you down more than switching from one task to the other. Stay with one thing, finish it and then switch to the next. This means having allocated weekly time slots for clients, sales calls, marketing activities, etc. Batch your tasks and get them done much faster and without the frustration.
- manage your fears and limiting beliefs
This is a biggie. Most people let their fears get in the way of implementing their ideas. They tell themselves things like I’m not good enough yet, I won’t get enough clients, somebody might think it’s stupid, and so on. Unfortunately this means most great ideas are never implemented. And it’s a shame because often just a subtle shift in perspective dissolves these hurdles. Here’s where having a coach/mentor or at the very least a motivated group of peers will help immensely.
A coach and mentor can’t make you rich, only you doing the work can make you rich. But a good coach/mentor who has walked their talk can get you there much faster.
