Setting goals and actions using Octagons

This is a technique I use with clients to help them to identify the steps they need to take to achieve the goal they have set for themselves. I like this method as it helps to cluster similar types of steps together and also allows you to move steps up and down to ensure the steps are set out in the correct order. It is also useful if the client can see where steps from different strands link together as this can also help to identify what steps are important and the order they need to be completed by.

How to use it

Ask you client to identify the big goal they want to achieve, this is then written inside a rectangle at the top of the page

You then ask your client to list down all the activities using an Octagon for each activity

When your client has done this ask them to cluster the octagons in columns under the rectangle, putting in each column steps that are linked together.

When the client has done this they will now have a list of actions they need to complete to achieve their goal. This is a really good visual of the goal and the action steps needed to be taken, once they are in the columns the client can also start to add dates to each hexagon to show when the step needs to be achieved by. As each step is completed they can cross it through or remove it from the list.

Tip

I always give the client lots of cut up octagonal shapes so that they can play around with the list as much as they want, it also works very well if you use laminated shapes or magnetic ones. This is also a very tactile exercise with the client being in full control of what they are doing, all you would do as the coach would be to ask questions to prompt them to think about other steps they could take and in want order they should be completed.

Other uses

Can be used to set projects, time management, order or tasks to complete, vision and value work
